What Does a Nephrologist Do?
A nephrologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating kidney diseases. They complete extensive training beyond medical school, including an internal medicine residency followed by a nephrology fellowship.
Nephrologist vs. Urologist
While both specialists deal with the kidneys, a nephrologist focuses on the medical (non-surgical) treatment of kidney diseases, while a urologist handles surgical conditions. They often work together to provide comprehensive kidney care.
Your First Visit
During your first appointment, your nephrologist will review your medical history, current medications, and lab results. They may order additional blood tests, urine tests, or imaging studies to fully assess your kidney health.
